Building a Business While Carrying the Weight of It

Team Plan launched in September 2022 with a clear vision and strong momentum.

The business grew quickly, expanding from one employee to three and then continuing to scale as opportunities increased across the industry.

For Rob, the ambition was always bigger than simply delivering projects himself.

He wanted to build a business that could operate successfully across multiple construction sites while creating more stability for both his team and his family life.

But as growth accelerated, so did the demands.

Rob found himself travelling across the UK, working away from home regularly, managing customers, projects, staffing, finances, and delivery, all while trying to grow the business strategically.

At the same time, he was balancing the responsibilities of family life with two young children at home.

The result was constant mental pressure.

As Rob explains in the case study, stress and anxiety were not challenges he had experienced significantly before growing the business. But once the responsibility of leading a growing team landed fully on his shoulders, the pressure became relentless.

Even outside of work, the business was always on his mind.

The Reality of Growth Without Structure

One of the biggest challenges Rob faced was that he remained heavily involved in every area of the company.

Like many founders, he was deeply embedded in operations, project delivery, staffing decisions, finances, and day-to-day problem solving.

That support helped him move away from reactive leadership and begin working more strategically on the business rather than constantly inside it.

The operational and personal impact of these changes became clear quickly.

By implementing more structure, standardising processes, and improving internal systems, Rob was able to free up time, reduce stress, and focus on higher-level leadership responsibilities.

The business itself continued to grow strongly.

Team Plan:

  • more than doubled turnover year-on-year for three consecutive years
  • expanded the size of the team significantly
  • improved organisational structure and scalability
  • took on its first apprentice to support long-term skills development within the industry

 

That apprenticeship decision became one of the most successful strategic choices the business had made, helping address future talent shortages while supporting sustainable growth.

But perhaps the most powerful result was personal rather than operational.

For the first time since building the business, Rob was able to take a family holiday without checking his phone or laptop once while away.

For many business owners, that level of freedom feels impossible.

Yet it often becomes achievable when the right support, structure, systems, and leadership framework are in place.
